Did you know that as a homeowner, you are responsible for the water and sewer laterals on your property?

Water Lateral

The homeowner’s responsibility for the water service lateral begins at the connection to the water meter inside the meter box. This is called the service connection. If a leak occurs at any point downstream of the water meter, it will need to be repaired immediately to avoid a high water bill.

Leaks in the service lateral can be difficult to locate. Nevada has very porous soil that may cause service leaks to take a long time to surface. Contact a certified plumber if you need assistance locating a leak.

Sewer Lateral

The homeowner’s responsibility for the sewer service lateral ends at the connection to the main in the street. A sewer line blockage is the responsibility of the homeowner throughout the entire pipe until the connection to the City’s main. Sewer line breakages are the responsibility of the homeowner until the point where the sewer line crosses the boundary of the property.

If a plumber has inspected your sewer line and determined that a breakage or blockage is on the City side, video evidence may be submitted to the Utilities Department for review.

Service Line Insurance

The City has partnered with Service Line Warranties of America to offer optional insurance coverage to residents for water and sewer service lines. Most basic homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover service laterals.

Service Line Warranties of America is a separate entity from the City of North Las Vegas, and participating in their service plan will not affect the price, availability, or terms of service you have with the City.
