The City of North Las Vegas is committed to fostering, cultivating and preserving a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our City team members are constituents’ most valuable assets and advocates, and the collective sum of the individual differences, life experiences, knowledge, innovation, self-expression, unique capabilities and talent that our team members invest in their work represents a significant part of not only our culture but our reputation and City’s achievement as well.
We strive to build a welcoming environment where team members are encouraged to bring their whole self to work, where differences are valued, recognized and celebrated. We embrace and encourage each team member’s differences in age, color, disability, ethnicity, family or marital status, gender identity or expression, language, national origin, physical or mental ability, political affiliation, race, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, veteran status, and other characteristics that make our team members unique. The City and its constituents benefit from a diversity of thought, experience and backgrounds!
What is DEI?
Diversity is the presence of difference within a given setting or group. Diversity in the workplace means differences in team members based on race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, geography, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, heritage, life experiences or other factors.
A person isn’t diverse; they are unique! They bring diversity to a group with new ideas and broader perspectives. The goal is not to look for a diverse person or candidate for an organization. Rather, diversity is about the wonderful differences that exist among a collective or group.
Equity aims to ensure that everyone has access to the same opportunities. Equity recognizes that not everyone starts from the same place because external advantages and barriers may exist. Recognizing and acknowledging uneven starting points helps correct the imbalance.
While diversity and inclusion are both outcomes, equity is not. Rather, equity refers to the process an organization engages in to ensure that every member of the team has fair and equitable opportunities to grow, contribute, develop and succeed.
Inclusion is the state of being valued, respected and supported. It focuses on the needs of individuals and ensuring that the right conditions are in place for each person to achieve their full potential. Inclusion isn’t a natural consequence of diversity; there can exist a diverse team of talent without inclusion. The City of North Las Vegas is committed to both diversity and inclusion to make all team members and residents feel welcomed and valued, and to provide opportunities for all to grow.
We expect that all of the agencies and partners the City works with hold the same values and commitment within their own organizations.
