The Traffic Engineering section oversees development of the City’s transportation system. We work to achieve an infrastructure system that addresses demand and capacity, employs smart technologies and joins transit, road, bicycle and pedestrian features together into a safe, efficient and environmentally-sensitive transportation network.
This section is also responsible for determining future multi-modal transportation needs and identifying the most practical way to achieve them. Our focus includes:

Traffic Operations
The Traffic Operations section is responsible for constructing and maintaining intersection traffic signals, fire station emergency signals, school flashers, street and park lighting systems, IT Fiber optic systems, traffic signs, and pavement markings. Current programs that are managed by this work group include:
- Conversion of over 40 protected/permissive left turn traffic signals to flashing yellow arrows.
- Continue to upgrade the communication network among traffic signals and to the Freeway and Arterial System of Transportation (FAST).
- Evaluation of emerging energy saving luminaire technologies to help the City reduce power consumption and maintenance burden.
- Removal and replacement of substandard traffic signs in the City’s mature areas.
- Support of the construction of new parks and revitalization of mature parks.
- Upgrading fiber optic system splices to fusion splices at City facilities.
- Maintaining roadway pavement markings.
