Fire Explorers
Learn what it is like to be a firefighter!
The North Las Vegas Fire Department provides the opportunity for high school and college students to become familiar with careers in the fire service. Through classroom instruction, hands-on training and volunteer work, Explorers gain a base of knowledge and experience that benefit them not only in fire service careers but in all future endeavors. The program encourages safety, accountability, fitness, communication, teamwork and leadership.
The Explorer Program is open to high school and college students ages 15-21. Meetings are conducted from 7:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on scheduled Sundays. Each meeting includes classroom instruction and hands-on drills with exposure to fire equipment and suppression techniques.
- Become familiar with career fields in the fire service
- Learn fire safety
- Volunteer in the community
- Observe the inner workings of a fire department
- Perform basic duties required of an entry-level firefighter
- Participate in ride-alongs
- Receive mentorship and career guidance
- Make friends and have fun!
Requirements
- Attend four consecutive Sunday recruitment meetings.
- Attend regular meetings from 7:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on scheduled Sundays.
- Assist with one community event every month.
- Maintain at least a "C" average in all classes and remain in good standing at school.
- No arrests or convictions for any serious offenses.
- Wear and maintain the required uniform/equipment for meetings and events.
- Remove pierced jewelry before any activity.
- Maintain good hygiene; maintain a clean-shaven appearance. Hair length and/or sideburns shall not extend past the lower edge of the ear lobe, however hair may be pinned up to meet this standard. Mustaches shall not extend below the corner of the mouth; goatees are not permitted.
Annual membership fee: $100
Applicants who turn 21 during the recruitment process may continue in the program. All members who turn 21 while in the program must continue their college education and fire service entrance exams.
All Explorers may continue in the program until a full-time fire service position is acquired.
