Emergency Preparedness

Being prepared for an emergency can help reduce the fear, panic and impacts of a disaster. Prepare yourself and your loved ones before an emergency occurs. The North Las Vegas Emergency Management department wants to ensure the residents and business owners of our beloved city are prepared for any natural and man-made disaster as best as possible by providing resources and education.

 

Prepare Your Home

Build an Emergency Kit

Assemble a disaster supply kit with food, water, cash, a flashlight, batteries, first aid kit, and supplies for
your car to last at least 3 days. Click the topic heading for a comprehensive checklist from Ready.gov

  • Water (one gallon per day per person)
  • Non-perishable food
  • Battery or hand crank powered radio
  • Prescription medications

Have a Plan for Everyone in your Household

Have a plan that includes how you will communicate in a disaster, how to stay informed of emergency notices and any special accommodations your family may need (disabilities, medications, etc..). Click the topic heading for 12 ways to prepare for a disaster. Some things you may want to consider:

  • Possible escape routes from home
  • Central location for important family documents (insurance, records, identification, etc...)
  • Teach everyone in the household how to turn off utilities to prevent further damage
  • Establish a secondary location you may go to in the event of an evacuation

Consider ADA Accommodations for Family Members

For people with special needs, preparedness can be even more critical. Click the topic heading for a variety of resources from Ready.gov regarding disabilities or see our Access and Functional Needs tab. Below are some areas of preparedness you may want to consider when planning for family members with ADA:

  • Keep detailed written information about the specifications of medication regime, along with doctor(s) and pharmacists’ information
  • Wear a medical alert tag or bracelet that identifies your disability 
  • Store a writing pad and pencils to communicate 
  • If you rely on a service animal, consider their care as well 
  • Show your loved ones how to operate machinery or wheelchairs in the event you require assistance

Consider Your Pets Needs

Consider everyone in your household including pets. Click on the topic heading for a comprehensive list to guide you. Below are some things you may want to consider when planning: 

  • Get a rescue alert sticker to let first responders know you have a pet(s) in the home 
  • Never evacuate without your pets.
  • Look for pet-friendly places to go in an emergency ahead of time. 
  • Create a kit with food, water, and animal first aid to last 3-7 days 
  • Purchase a travel crate or carriers for all of your pets in the event of evacuation

Prepare Your Business

To protect their employees, their services, and to ensure a positive future, developing and establishing an emergency is a must for any business. 

Assess your risk: every business has unique vulnerabilities and weaknesses that may be impacted differently considering different hazards. A risk or hazard assessment may help you find which disasters are most likely to affect your business. 

Create a plan: The best way to recover is to have an effective plan, consider the following resources to assist with building a plan

2. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) emergency preparedness checklist and toolkit

Allocate money: Include funds for emergency exercises, training, and supplies in your annual budget 

Evaluate your plan: Testing your plan is vital to its success and recovery. Doing test runs will reveal weaknesses in your plan and build employee confidence. 

Establish assistance channels: Find programs and grants that may be able to assist you with your business if you are affected by a disaster.
