Helping the NLV Community During the Pandemic

Southern Nevada Urban Micro Academy (SNUMA)- When schools closed due to COVID in spring 2020, remote learning challenged families. The CNLV responded and opened a Micro Academy forPicture1 the benefit of North Las Vegas residents. The city provided facilities, funding, and the technology essential for SNUMA to operate. SNUMA was housed at Silver Mesa Rec Center and Neighborhood Rec Center. It began with 50 students and grew upwards to 100 students at peak enrollment. Grades K-8 were serviced at both SNUMA locations.

The mission of SNUMA was to provide in-person learning. During the two years that SNUMA was in operation, each child received individual support, time to socialize and maintain social emotional health during a turbulent global period. Committing to serve the children in NLV during the pandemic marked the beginning of a unique educational partnership between the community and City. The U.S. Department of Education- Family and Community Engagement Department- Mission states,

“When families, communities and schools work together,
students are more successful and the entire community benefits.”
